Payment processing is the technical handling of payment transactions: authorisation and monitoring of a payment, collection and storage of the data and passing it on to the parties to the settlement.

In plain words

When you tap a card on a terminal, a chain runs in seconds: terminal, acquirer, payment system, issuing bank (a check of the balance, limit and security) and an “approved” or “declined” reply. A processing centre, run by a bank or a separate processing company, serves all of this. Processing does not move the money itself: clearing and settlement happen separately and later.

Example. An online payment got a “declined” answer in two seconds: the issuing bank’s processing checked the balance and the limit, and the bank refused it.

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general level of prices, so that money buys fewer goods and services than before.

Example. Prices rose 10% over the year and your deposit earned 8%: formally you earned something, but you can buy a little less with that money than last year (108 against 110, illustrative numbers).
